Dr. Jeffrey A. Gray

Research Interests
I study small molecules using high resolution optical spectroscopy. My measurements include basic properties such as electric dipole moments, magnetic moments, and bond lengths, which are often compared to quantum chemical calculations. Single-mode cw lasers with sub-Doppler techniques provide sufficient resolution in the frequency domain, and pulsed lasers with coherence methods (e.g. quantum beats) are applicable in the time domain. Some of my favorite molecules are NiH, MnH, OH, and NO. The spectra of these molecules fit to Hamiltonian models containing complex angular momentum couplings. The electronic structure parameters derived from these models are often disguised in the raw spectra.

I develop spectroscopic techniques for use as probes of chemical processes. Applications include combustion, atmospheric, coordination chemistry, and advanced polymeric materials (CLiPS). Laser-induced fluorescence is highly sensitive but difficult to quantify because of competing collisional de-excitation processes. By measuring rates for quenching by specific species, I aim to determine fluorescence quantum yields under various conditions. I use cavity ring-down spectroscopy to probe weak transitions that involve non-fluorescing excited states. I am also investigating non-linear optical methods such as two-photon excitation and two-color wave-mixing spectroscopy as probes of luminous environments.
